Each year in February we observe National Children’s Health Month. This year’s slogan is “Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile.” Regardless of what you may have heard, your child gets more health benefits from tap water than from bottled water. In many municipalities, fluoride is added to the water source to provide benefits to its residents.
Research has shown that simply drinking water with fluoride can reduce your risk of tooth decay by 25%. Fluoride does the following:
- Strengths teeth – Being absorbed into the teeth, fluoride makes them stronger and more resistant to decay.
- Prevents cavities – It protects the surface of your child’s teeth from foods and sugars.
- Prevents softening enamel – An enamel softening acid is produced by plaque bacteria, and the presence of fluoride helps counteract its effect on the tooth.
- Rebuilds weakened enamel – Fluoride helps reverse the early stages of tooth decay.
It’s crucial that we teach our children the basics of proper oral care. Healthy oral hygiene includes regular brushing and flossing. Tap water will provide additional benefits and protection for your children teeth. I recommend your child visits to the dentist at least two times per year starting at 2-3 years old.
Our goal is to help develop a smile that will last throughout your child’s lifetime.
Yours truly,
Patrick Soria, DDS
