    Sedation: Nitrous Oxide or Oral

    By Patrick J. Soria, DDS | Blog | 0 comment | 31 January, 2017 | 0

At our office, we understand that a trip to the dentist is a nerve-wracking experience for some. My team and I are sensitive to your feelings, and will do everything possible to provide comfort and calm.

Sometimes all that is needed to keep your dental anxiety at bay is a gentle hand and a warm smile. We promise that our staff is sympathetic to your needs. We provide you with words of assurance and comfort, allowing time to discuss any questions or concerns you have and helping you feel as relaxed as possible. In extreme cases this may not be enough. When needed, we can provide additional peace of mind with Nitrous Oxide or Oral Sedation.

    • Nitrous Oxide
Often called “laughing gas” nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative. It is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a mask that fits over your nose. It will not put you to sleep and you will remain awake and able to hear and respond at all times. The relaxing effects kick in within the first few minutes and will wear off shortly after the mask is removed.

    • Oral Sedation
The degree of sedation provided by this method will vary according to the dosage given. Usually administered via a pill that you take about an hour before your procedure, you will begin to feel tired and groggy. Relaxing body and mind; some people will even fall asleep during a procedure. But the sedation is still mild and the patient can still be woken with a gentle shake.

At our office, your comfort is our priority. If you struggle with anxiety and fear, talk to us about your concerns. There are important factors to think about when considering sedation for dental procedures. We will discuss each option with you, and gather your health information to determine the best way to proceed so that you can feel safe and secure.
