It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the year! With that in mind, I thought I’d provide helpful information for some of my patients who have Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) through their employer.
HSAs and FSAs are tax-advantaged tools that let you set aside money for medical and dental expenses. Using these accounts can help you save significantly on your out-of-pocket dental costs throughout the year.
Why Use an HSA or FSA for Dental Care?
When it comes to managing the cost of dental care, HSAs and FSAs are often overlooked tools that offer significant financial advantages. These accounts enable you to pay for many dental services with pre-tax dollars, thereby reducing your overall out-of-pocket costs. With contribution limits increasing in 2025, there’s no better time to use these accounts to support your oral health.
2025 Contribution Limits and Savings Potential
For 2025, HSA contribution limits have increased to $4,150 for individuals and $8,300 for families. FSAs now allow up to $3,200 in contributions. Because you’re using pre-tax income, a $300 dental procedure might only “cost” you around $225, depending on your tax bracket. These accounts make it easier to budget for both preventive care and necessary procedures throughout the year.
Understanding the Differences Between HSAs and FSAs
One of the main differences between HSAs and FSAs is how funds roll over. HSAs are more flexible—unused funds roll over each year and can even grow with interest, making them ideal for long-term planning. FSAs, however, are generally “use-it-or-lose-it,” so it’s important to take advantage of the benefits before year-end or before your employer’s grace period ends. Most preventive and restorative treatments are eligible, but cosmetic procedures like whitening typically aren’t.
Plan Ahead to Maximize Your Benefits
If you’re considering a procedure in the second half of the year, now is the time to plan. Patients with FSAs should especially review their balances and schedule any necessary treatments before the funds expire. Even if you’re thinking ahead to 2026, contributing to your HSA or FSA now can set you up for a more affordable year of dental care.
