Hooray for National Tooth Fairy Day!

    By Patrick J. Soria, DDS | Blog | 0 comment | 30 August, 2019 | 0

August 22nd is National Tooth Fairy Day. Do you still remember leaving a tooth under the pillow as a child? Children are often so excited about losing a tooth because they know a visit from the Tooth Fairy is imminent. Some believe that the Tooth Fairy takes children’s lost teeth from under their pillows as they sleep, replacing it with money. But it also creates an opportunity to reinforce some of the oral hygiene habits that we are trying to instill in our children.

For National Tooth Fairy Day, here are a few fun ideas that the Tooth Fairy can do to help encourage good oral health for kids:

Leave a Special Note: Who says the Tooth Fairy can only come after losing a tooth? Why not add an extra surprise from time to time? The Tooth Fairy can leave a note of encouragement when a child has a loose tooth. There are some great ideas for creating your own letters from the Tooth Fairy including templates and jokes, and you can also use this as an opportunity for a friendly reminder to help them stay on track with their oral care routine. The Tooth Fairy can remind them to floss every day or can point out that she’s noticed an improvement since the last tooth she picked up.

Surprise Them with Gifts: Traditionally, kids are left with money in exchange for their teeth, but there are Tooth Fairy gifts that can make the experience a little more special such as a toothbrush with their favorite cartoon character, a new flavor of toothpaste, or some floss. This will help encourage your child to keep up good dental hygiene.

Create a Brushing and Flossing Chart: Making a daily brushing and flossing chart for your child will help them keep track of their oral hygiene routine. You can add special stickers to mark each day’s accomplishments. Check online for lots of fun chart ideas.

So, the next time your child loses a tooth, encourage the Tooth Fairy to not just stick a dollar or two under his pillow. Ask her to incorporate some of these ideas. The Tooth Fairy can be a fun experience for you and your child. It’s an opportunity to celebrate their healthy smiles, encourage good oral hygiene, and truly connect with them as they grow.
