As your dentist, I’m always paying attention to new technologies that could improve the way we care for your teeth and overall health. One of the most exciting developments on the horizon is artificial intelligence (AI). While we don’t currently use AI in our office, I want to share some of the ways it’s beginning to shape the future of dentistry — and how it could eventually enhance your care.
Diagnostics
One major area where AI is showing promise is in diagnostics. In the near future, AI could help dentists analyze X-rays and 3D scans with even greater accuracy. These tools are designed to catch signs of tooth decay, fractures, gum disease, and even early signs of oral cancer earlier than ever before. Imagine being able to spot and treat small problems long before they become bigger issues — that’s the kind of improvement AI could help us achieve.
Treatment Planning
Treatment planning is another exciting area of growth. AI systems are being developed that can help design more personalized treatment plans by analyzing a patient’s entire dental history, lifestyle factors, and even genetic predispositions. This means that, someday, creating a plan for things like orthodontics, dental implants, or cosmetic treatments could become even more precise and customized to fit each patient’s individual needs.
Office Visits
Even the experience of visiting the dental office could change. Researchers are working on AI-powered virtual assistants to help with scheduling, insurance verification, and answering common patient questions. In the future, you might be able to get faster answers, schedule appointments more easily, and spend even less time filling out paperwork before you see me.
While AI is still emerging in the dental world, I believe it has great potential to enhance patient care — not replace the personal relationship we’ve built, but to strengthen it. I’ll continue to watch these advancements closely and consider ways they might benefit our practice and, most importantly, you. As always, thank you for trusting me with your dental health!
